We’ve been biting our lips in anticipation for months, knowing that our special summer report will get you out there to try some terrific new places and wait anxiously, as we are, for some more to open their doors!

SECOND ACTS:

NOW OPEN…Anthony’s Runway 84, Fort Lauderdale/ More than a year ago, the iconic Anthony’s Runway 84 closed its doors for a $3 million makeover. If everything’s gone right, the dining institution, which celebrated its 40th anniversary this year, will make you feel like you’re walking through The Copa in “Goodfellas.” The reborn supper club is filled with jewel tones, table lamps, and a stage for live entertainment. In addition to a new look, Runway 84 — still a “New York- style red sauce joint – has unveiled a revitalized menu, new beverage program and the addition of a private dining room. Owner Anthony Bruno (Andy’s Live Fire Grill & Bar) has partnered with fellow restaurateurs Pat Marzano (ex-owner of Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza) and Marc Falsetto (Handcrafted Hospitality restaurant group). Guests are “encouraged to dress for the occasion,” so ditch the golf shorts and play dress-up for the evening. I know I will!

NOW OPEN…Kanpai, Boca Raton/ Closed for two years after a fire caused structural damage to the restaurant in July 2021, this Japanese izakaya (the equivalent of tapas – small plates) sushi-yakiniku (barbecue) mashup has finally re-opened for its big comeback! We’ve been waitinbg patiently and can’t wait to see its updated interior that comprises three dining areas, a sushi bar, a craft cocktail bar, a sake bar, a wine library and 13 smokeless grills operated by barbecue butlers. This icon on the corner of Federal Highway and Palmetto Park has also redesigned its menu. Its famous sushi boats are back, plus sashimi and nigiri, hibachi ried rice, Korean-influenced bibimbap, bulgogi and seafood pancakes plus a whole lotta somethings for everyone.

NOW OPEN…Death by Pizza, Delray Beach/ Koby Wexler’s popular pizza pop-up has begun slinging Detroit-style pies in a new brick-and-mortar in Delray on the corner of NE Second St. and South Federal. (Early in the pandemic, customers saw Death By Pizza’s tantalizing rectangles on Instagram, then had to prepay online, then wait all week for Wexler’s “pizza drops” the following Wednesday or Sunday at his family’s Two Fat Cookies bakery off Atlantic Avenue.) Whew! Now it’s easy… The pizza crust is sourdough, created with a 9- month-old starter Wexler fed daily in the bakery. The new space enables customers to eat these crazy-creative pies on-site or to-go.
