If we’re in the mood for Kung Pao Shrimp, Shrimp Scampi or even a fresh Shrimp Louie salad, we’d rather head over to University Commons opposite the FAU campus (I-95 at Glades Rd.) The shopping plaza is home to one of the highest trafficked Whole Foods in the U.S., Barnes & Noble, Nordstrom Rack and more. At its easternmost end are three restaurants you might not notice as you drive by, but they can cook up top-rate versions of whatever we’re craving.

It could be coincidence, serendipity or a laser-smart developer, but these three establishments represent the three most statistically popular kinds of cuisine in the nation: Italian, Chinese and all-American.  in the mood for — Mario’s Osteria, P.F. Chang’s or J. Alexander’s — but you’ll likely want to try all three.

Reasonably priced, dependable and often suprisingly delicious, these restaurants are always buzzing with hungry patrons, so reservations are recommended. At Mario’s Osteria, a family-owned upscale-casual, portions are intentionally large so patrons can take home leftovers. It’s the same with the other two. Almost everyone leaves carrying a bag.
