Salads at J. Alexander’s are incredibly fresh and crunchy, our favorites being the Cypress, (chicken, pecans, bacon, cheese, avocado, cornbread croutons and ranch dressing); and especially Shrimp Louie, an early 1900s California creation of jumbo shrimp, composed or tossed, with shredded iceberg, tomato, hard-boiled egg and avocado, dressed in “Kiawah Island” dressing, a Southern riff on Thousand Island dressing.

Entrée categories are Burgers & Sandwiches, Steaks & Prime Rib, and Specialties. The Old Fashioned Cheeseburger with Tillamook (Oregon) Cheddar is quite delicious, partly because of the meat’s quality, partly because of the prep (chuck ground daily and hand-shaped to avoid pressure which releases natural juices) and partly because of careful hardwood grilling. The Nashville Hot Chicken with Southern slaw is pretty dang-good too!

The jumbo lump Carolina Crab Cakes with Dijon mustard sauce, Mr. Jack’s Crispy Chicken Platter and sprawling rack of BBQ Baby Back Ribs, both with Southern slaw and fries, and Wood-grilled Pork Chop with apricot glaze and smashed potatoes are just some of J. Alexander’s Southern-style Specialties. Fresh seafood at market price and several cuts of quality steaks are featured too.

Dessert Recommendations: Key Lime Pie is a must here, but occasionally on weekends, there’s an off-menu, super-sized dessert surprise, Powerful Stuff. It has its own “secret” customer call list. Ask the hostess to register you!
