We feel compelled to geographically digress to #151 on the “2024 Best Barbecue” list, West Palm Beach. Two serious players in the Barbecue game, Pig Beach BBQ and Tropical BBQ, cannot be ignored.

The origins of Pig Beach go back to Gowanus, Brooklyn (now closed) and Astoria, Queens (now a bona fide foodie’s paradise two decades after I first pitched the destination to media on behalf of the Queens Tourism Office.) Astoria was just coming into its own, and elite chefs Matt Abdoo and Shane McBride left Michelin stars behind to pursue mastering the pit, launching the Brooklyn and Queens locations, a line of rubs and sauces, and authoring an award-winning cookbook. Two years ago, they opened Pig Beach on S. Dixie.

From the playful muralled interpretation of a porkers’ beach on the building’s side to the industrial vibe and curated playlist, the place is spacious, clean, friendly. Like Smoke Shack, orders are taken tableside. Best Bets: Pimento Cheese & Crackers; Meat & Two (sides) with a choice of salt & pepper crust brisket/pulled pork shoulder in spicy vinegar sauce/smoked turkey breast/or cheddar jalapeño sausage (!); BBQ Sampler for at two or more, with all the aforementioned, plus three baby backs with a peach honey glaze; potato salad, baked beans; cornbread.
